Paulig Group’s coffee company, Gustav Paulig Ltd, is Finland’s leading company in the coffee business. In Paulig’s coffee roastery project, production facilities and offices were built at the recently opened Vuosaari harbour. Operations were moved there in the course of 2009. The production plant serves Finnish and export markets.

The exterior architecture reflects the different functions of the complex. The main facade material is recyclable dark brown corten steel, colour of which resembles the colour of roasted coffee beans. Also big glass surfaces and light-coloured aluminium sheets are being used in office and roastery wings.

The visitor can, through a large glass wall, immediately from the entrance court see the most important process of the complex, the roasting itself. Also inside the building, transparency is an important element in designing a pleasant working environment. Open plan and views to working spaces of other groups enable better communication between employees.

Environmental viewpoints have been a central part of the design thinking from beginning to end. The location at the Vuosaari harbour has meant a substantial reduction of coffee in road transport in Helsinki. The choice of durable building materials reduce the operational environmental impacts for the entire life cycle of the roastery. Natural day light is provided through skylights and large glass walls to ensure healthy working environment in the production spaces as well as offices.

The Paulig Coffee Roastery won the Finnish Steel Construction Prize (Teräsrakennepalkinto) in 2009.
